Day one:

-Creative Color
How to effectively use unorthodox color in portraiture to capture, accentuate, and deliver emotion.
Through a demo and paint along, we will discuss topics such as color choice, form, value control, brushwork, composition, materials, paint consistency, and much more.

Day two:

-Realism
An exploration of expressive realism.
During this demo, we will tackle painting a realistic portrait alla prima. During the demo, we will learn to apply many of the topics learned on the previous day and also cover color mixing from a limited pallet, maintaining a strong sense of realism through expressive decision making, how to sight proportions on the fly, how to use a quick pace to your advantage, and more.

Day three:

-Beyond
An exploration of just how far we can go.
This day will be a wild and free day of experimentation. We will incorporate everything gone over during the previous two days and see how far we can push it. We will discuss how we can step outside of our comfort zone, how to navigate an unknown path and listen to our painting as it develops. We will talk about extended techniques, breaking from tradition, and, perhaps most importantly, we will drill down deep to discover what makes us want to paint and how we can find out greatest joy in the process of creating.

Each student will receive personal attention and critique during every class. I’ll make myself available for further discussion after the scheduled time concludes. Each student will have the opportunity to walk away with three completed portraits by the end of the workshop.

All levels welcome (some experience in oils preferred).
All materials graciously provided for each student by Trekell and Gamblin.
