In this workshop artists of all levels will learn how to use soft pastels and mixed media to draw portraits.

Demonstrations will be given on using a limited and full-color palette. For a limited palette, we’ll explore a contrast of cool and warm colors to create a mood in our drawing. Color mixing, proportions, and using mixed media such as watercolor and acrylics with pastel will also be demonstrated throughout the demos.

Participants will also be shown techniques on quick sketching a live model with pastels. Using shapes, simple values, and line, we’ll explore ways to make expressive marks to depict the model. Throughout the workshop, the instructor will speak to each student individually on the progress of their work. Students are welcome to bring examples of their work for additional critique.

Schedule:

Day 1/
• We will start with a brief introduction about the course.
• Instructor will share examples of portrait sketches
• A demonstration on portrait drawing using pastels
• Color mixing will be discussed through the demonstration
• Students will work on pastel assignment
• Speaking to individual students on the progress of their drawing

Day 2/
• Presentation on a limited color palette
• Demonstration on using Mixed Media
• Students will work on mixed media assignment
• Speaking to individual students on the progress of their drawing
• Pastel demonstration on quick sketching live model.
• Students sketch live model
• End of workshop.
